A newly completed playground will nearly always photograph well.
The surface is clean. The colours are fresh. The design is intact. At that point, almost any correctly installed wetpour system can create a strong first impression.
But Day One tells us very little about longevity.
The real measure of a playground surface is what remains after years of sunlight, rainfall, intensive use, cleaning and environmental exposure — and whether the original design continues to perform throughout the life of the asset.
That is why these images from Tsuen Wan Plaza in Hong Kong matter.
The playground was installed using Rosehill TPV® in 2021. It was photographed following installation and revisited in August 2026, approximately five years later.
The latest images are not the end of the story. They are evidence of a surface progressing towards a decade of service while continuing to retain the colour, definition and creative intent established at installation.
Day One: creativity without compromise
The original design uses colour and form to transform the surfacing from a passive safety layer into an integral part of the playground.
Large areas of blue, pink and red flow around sculpted mounds, climbing ropes and play equipment. Elsewhere, yellow, green, orange and purple create pathways, activity zones and visual connections across the site.
The surface does not merely sit beneath the equipment. It helps define the character of the entire space.
This is where the design flexibility of wetpour becomes particularly valuable. Colours can be combined without restricting the designer to standard tiles or repeating patterns. Shapes can flow around equipment, changes in level and irregular boundaries. Mounds, routes, graphics and contrasting zones can all be incorporated into one continuous design.
However, creative freedom at the design stage only has lasting value if the material can retain that design in service.
A complex playground may use several contrasting colours and carefully formed interfaces. If those colours deteriorate at different rates, or if the surface experiences premature shrinkage, cracking or granule loss, the original design begins to disappear.
The question should therefore not simply be:
What can we create on Day One?
It should also be:
How do we protect that design for the decade ahead?
Five years later: the design is still working
The photographs taken in August 2026 provide a valuable visual follow-up.
They are not a substitute for a formal condition survey or technical testing, but they provide clear, identifiable field evidence of how the installed surface has aged in a demanding outdoor urban environment.
Approximately five years after installation, the original design remains clearly recognisable. Strong colour contrasts continue to define the play zones, pathways and sculpted features. The blues, pinks, reds, yellows and greens still work together as part of the wider play environment.
That matters because appearance in a project like this is not merely cosmetic. Colour is part of the way the space is navigated, understood and experienced.
When a material retains the visual language of the original design, the designer’s work continues to create value long after the opening photographs have been taken.
The surface has not yet completed a decade in service. However, its condition after approximately five years provides a strong foundation for continued use towards that objective, supported by appropriate inspection, cleaning and maintenance.
This is the difference between designing for installation and designing for service life.
Designing for longevity
Wetpour specifications frequently concentrate on initial requirements: material descriptions, critical fall height, thickness and colour selection.
Those requirements are important, but they do not necessarily distinguish between materials that appear similar when newly installed and materials designed to retain their performance over a longer period.
A longevity-led specification should also consider:
- Resistance to ultraviolet weathering.
- Colour stability across the selected palette.
- Strength of the bound granule-and-binder composite.
- Resistance to shrinkage, cracking and permanent deformation.
- Compatibility between the wearing course, binder and base system.
- Installation quality and recorded material ratios.
- Inspection, cleaning and maintenance throughout the asset’s life.
The finished surface is a system. Its long-term performance cannot be determined from the name of the granule alone or from a test undertaken immediately after installation.
The client does not walk on loose granules. They use a composite surface that must continue to work as a combination of material, binder, construction, installation and maintenance.
Recycled content measures an input. Sustainability measures an outcome.
Sustainability discussions in playground surfacing are often reduced to one question:
How much recycled content does the product contain?
That measures an input. It does not, by itself, measure the environmental outcome of the completed asset.
A product may contain recycled material and still require premature repair or replacement. If a surface loses its appearance, integrity or function earlier than expected, the environmental consequences extend beyond the replacement material.
They may include:
- Removal and disposal of the existing surface.
- Manufacture of replacement materials.
- Additional binder and packaging.
- Transportation back to the project.
- Labour, machinery and energy required for reinstatement.
- Disruption and loss of use while the work is completed.
Conversely, a surface that remains serviceable for longer spreads the impact of its manufacture and installation across a longer working life.
This does not mean recycled content is unimportant. It means recycled content should form part of a broader assessment that includes durability, maintenance, repairability, replacement frequency and whole-life performance.
True sustainability is not determined only by what goes into a surface. It is also determined by how successfully that surface performs and how long it avoids replacement.
Designed for the decade
The Hong Kong project demonstrates the question designers, specifiers and asset owners should ask at the start of every project:
Are we selecting a surface for the day it opens, or for the decade it is expected to serve?
Day One can demonstrate creativity and initial compliance. It cannot demonstrate longevity.
That evidence develops through material testing, controlled specification, installation quality, appropriate maintenance and documented performance over time.
When these elements are considered together, designers do not have to choose between creativity, technical performance and sustainability. A carefully specified and managed surface can protect all three.
The ambition should not be simply to create a playground that looks impressive when it is handed over.
It should be to create a playground whose design continues to work, whose materials continue to perform and whose value can still be seen throughout the decade ahead.
That is the Science of Performance.
